01Local SEO for small business

Google Maps favours the local.

Small business SEO is the one corner of marketing where being small helps. When someone searches "plumber near me", Google wants the business that is close, clearly does the job and is trusted by locals. Budget isn't on that list.

Big companies

Money, but no street.

National brands and franchises win the broad searches with big websites and big ad budgets. But they can't be close to everyone, their profiles are often thin, and their reviews rarely mention your suburb.

  • best hot water systems
  • how to unblock a drain
You

Small, close and known.

You're down the road, you do the job every week and your customers live nearby. Those are exactly the signals Google uses for local searches. The work is making sure Google can see them.

  • plumber near me
  • blocked drain Penrith
  • emergency plumber St Marys
  1. 1

    Relevance

Does your profile and website clearly match the search? Right category, every service listed, pages that say what you do.

  2. 2

    Distance

How close you are to the person searching. You can't move, but suburb pages and local photos help you reach further.

  3. 3

    Prominence

How well known and trusted you are: reviews, listings, links and how active your profile looks.

You don't need the biggest budget. You need Google to see what your customers already know.

02SEO for small business, do it yourself

Five fixes you can do this week.

No agency needed. If you can log in to your website and your Google Business Profile, these five changes cost nothing but an evening, and they fix the most common problems we find.

The title tag formula

BEST Plumber Penrith | Smith Plumbing | Blocked Drains, Hot Water & Gas Fitting near me
Local plumber in Penrith for blocked drains, hot water repairs and gas fitting. Same-day callouts across Western Sydney.

Example. Your homepage title tag names the service, the suburb, your business and your main jobs.

1

Rewrite your title tag

The blue headline Google shows for your homepage. Use the formula above. If yours says "Home" or just your business name, this is the fastest win on the page.

2

Make your H1 say what and where

The main heading on your homepage should read like "Plumber in Penrith", not "Welcome to our website". Google reads it, and so does every visitor deciding in three seconds.

3

Put your NAP in the footer

Name, address and phone number, written exactly as they appear on your Google Business Profile, at the bottom of every page. Same spelling, same suite number, same phone format.

4

Check your categories

One primary category that matches your main job, plus a few extra ones that are a real part of your work. Look at what the top three businesses near you use before you change anything.

5

List every service

Google lets you add up to 99 services to your profile. Add every job you actually do, then write a short plain description for your top 20. Each one is another search you can show up for.

Then run the site: check. Type site: followed by your web address into Google. The number of results is roughly how many of your pages Google knows about. Under 30 and there isn't much for it to rank. A five-page website is usually the reason a good small business is invisible outside its own name.

And check the map is on your contact page. A Google map embed of your business, your opening hours and your phone number as a tap-to-call link. Small things, but they tell Google and your customers the same story your profile does. Our guide on how to rank higher on Google Maps goes deeper.

03Small business SEO cost

Small budget? Spend it in this order.

What does SEO cost a small business? Less than most people fear, if you spend it in the right order. The trouble is that most small businesses buy the wrong thing first: a new website before their Google profile is finished, or a monthly package that sends reports nobody reads.

For a local business, the Google Business Profile is where most of the calls come from, so it gets the first dollar and the first hour. Reviews come next, because they decide who gets the call once you're on the list. Then the website basics, the listings, and only then new pages.

The real cost depends on how many suburbs you want, how crowded your trade is and how much you can do yourself. That's why we don't publish a price list. The free video review shows what's missing, and if you want help, we quote for that and nothing else.

  3. 3Website basicsTitle tags, headings, NAP, schema, speed

The things only you can do are the ones that matter most. Reviews come from your customers and photos come from your jobs. We can make it easier with a review link, a text template and a five-minute weekly routine, but the habit is yours.

The rest is where small business SEO services earn their keep. Competitor research, schema, indexing, writing pages that rank and cleaning up listings take hours and some know-how. That's the part we take off your plate through our local SEO service, and on the website side through web design when the site itself is the problem.

FAQ

Small business SEO questions.

What owner-operators ask us before getting started.

Small business SEO is the work that gets a small, usually local, business found on Google. For most owner-operators that means a complete Google Business Profile, a steady flow of reviews, a website that clearly says what you do and where, and listings that match. The aim is calls and enquiries, not traffic for its own sake.

For most local businesses, yes, because the people searching are ready to buy and the competition is other small businesses, not national brands. It is less worth it if you can't take on more work or you don't serve a defined area. The free video review will tell you honestly which camp you're in.

It depends on your trade, how many suburbs you want to rank in and how much you can do yourself. We don't publish prices because two businesses rarely need the same work. We record a free 3-minute review first, then quote for only what's missing.

A good part of it, yes. Rewriting your title tag and H1, putting your NAP in the footer, checking your categories, listing every service and asking for reviews are all things an owner can do. Research, schema, indexing and writing pages that rank are where most people get stuck.

Local SEO for small business focuses on Google Maps and "near me" searches. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, so the work is making your profile and website match the search, reaching further from your address, and building reviews and listings. Our local SEO page explains the full service.

Profile and website fixes often show movement within weeks. Ranking in the top three for busy searches can take a few months, depending on your suburb and competitors. WeFlow Pressure Cleaning went from nowhere to Google's first page in roughly four weeks.

Not always. Many small business websites only need a better title tag, a clear H1, matching contact details, schema and more pages. If the site is slow, broken on mobile or impossible to edit, a rebuild can be the cheaper path. We'll tell you which applies.

Lead with the service and suburb, then your business name, then your main services. For example: "BEST Plumber Penrith | Smith Plumbing | Blocked Drains, Hot Water & Gas Fitting near me". Each page gets its own, so no two are the same.

Yes. Reviews feed prominence, one of the three things Google weighs for local results, and they decide who gets the call once someone sees the list. Ask every happy customer, reply to every review and never buy them or trade them for discounts.

We're based in Western Sydney and most of our clients are across Sydney, but the review and the work happen online, so location isn't a barrier. Local knowledge helps when you're competing in suburbs like Penrith, Parramatta and Blacktown.

Access to your Google Business Profile and website, a yes or no on the services we list, photos from your jobs, and a few minutes a week for reviews and posts. We handle the rest and keep you updated in plain English.

Barely anything. You just do what you do best: Turn phone calls into customers.
