01Plumber Google Ads campaigns

One job type, one campaign.

Most plumber Google Ads accounts we see have one campaign called "Plumbing" with every keyword inside it. Then nobody can say whether hot water or blocked drains brought the calls. Splitting by job type fixes that, and lets each job have its own ads, budget and landing page.

1

Burst pipes and emergencies

Water through the ceiling means a call within minutes. Call ads, a tight radius and an ad schedule that matches when you really answer. emergency plumber near me

2

Blocked drains

Often the busiest plumbing search in Sydney, and it spikes after heavy rain. Its own budget, so a wet week doesn't drain everything else. blocked drain plumber

3

CCTV inspection and relining

Higher-value work where people compare quotes. Ads that lead to a page explaining the camera inspection and what relining avoids. pipe relining Sydney

4

Hot water

Same-day replacement is the promise people want. Many search by brand, so we group Rheem, Rinnai and other brand searches you actually supply. Rinnai hot water repairs

5

Gas fitting

Gas leaks, cooktops, heaters and gas hot water. The ad shows you're a licensed gasfitter, and the licence number goes where people can see it. gas plumber near me

6

Leak detection

A high water bill and no visible leak. These people research first, so a clear page on how you find leaks does a lot of the selling. water leak detection

A note on brand searches: bidding on searches like "Rheem hot water repair" is common. Using another company's trade mark in your ad text has rules, and implying you're an authorised dealer when you're not can mislead customers. We only name brands you genuinely supply or service. General information, not legal advice.

02High-intent plumbing keywords

Bid on the burst pipe, not the YouTube fix.

Two people type "blocked drain" into Google. One has sewage coming up through the shower. The other wants a trick with bicarb soda. Same words, very different value, and a loose ad pays for both clicks.

So we sort plumbing searches by intent. High intent means a problem happening now, a suburb, "near me" or a job name: those get the most budget. Research searches, like hot water costs or relining prices, get lower bids and a page that answers the question honestly. DIY and job searches become negatives.

Match types do the rest. Phrase and exact match keep spend on searches you chose. Broad match can find new searches, but only once tracking is solid and the negative list is long.

03Emergency plumbing auctions

When every plumber bids at once.

Google Ads is an auction. On the first cold Monday of winter, hot water systems fail across Sydney. After a big downpour, stormwater drains back up. Every plumber with an ad account wants those searches at the same moment, and the price of a click rises with the demand.

That's when an account without limits gets expensive. Automated bidding chases the volume, the emergency campaign eats the month's budget in two days, and your best job types go dark for the rest of the month.

We plan for those surges before they happen: separate budgets so emergencies can't starve hot water, bid limits so a click never costs more than the job is worth to you, and a plain rule about what happens when you're fully booked. If the vans are full, the ads pause. Paying for calls you can't take is the most expensive kind of advertising.

When demand spikes, we

Lift the emergency budget, not the whole account✓
Keep hot water on its own budget✓
Bid up only in suburbs you can reach today✓
Pause ads once the team is fully booked✓
Let the auction set any price it likes✕

Example rules. We agree yours with you before the first cold snap or storm, so nobody is guessing on the day.

04Call tracking for plumbers

Which job made the phone ring?

Most plumbing leads are phone calls, and phone calls are where most accounts lose track. We make sure every call is tied back to the campaign and the search that started it.

  • Calls straight from the ad

Google forwarding numbers on call assets show which campaign each call came from and how long it lasted. Short calls don't count as leads.

  • Calls from your website

Visitors from an ad see a tracked number, so a call after reading your hot water page still counts for the hot water campaign.

  • Forms with the job attached

Quote forms for relining, leak detection and hot water record the job type, so forms and calls land in the same report.

A cost per lead for every job type. Each month you see what you spent on blocked drains, hot water, gas and the rest, and how many calls and forms each one produced. Missed calls get flagged too. A run of missed calls at 7am usually means the schedule needs to change, not the keywords.

Ads and the map work together. Paid ads sit above the Google Maps results, and plenty of people scroll past them to the map. Your Google Business Profile, reviews and suburb pages win those calls without a cost per click. That's our local SEO for plumbers and trades, and the two share the same call tracking.

05Negative keywords for plumbers

Words that never reach your budget.

Plumbing searches pull in more than you'd think. People looking for supplies, parts, the Reece branch down the road, a Sydney Water account, a plumbing course or a job. None of them want a plumber at their door.

We start every plumber account with a negative list built for plumbing, then add to it from the search terms report every week. We also block the work you don't do. If you don't touch gas or commercial jobs, those words go on the list.

Some of our starting negatives

  • jobs
  • apprenticeship
  • salary
  • course
  • TAFE
  • licence
  • DIY
  • how to
  • YouTube
  • Bunnings
  • Reece
  • supplies
  • parts
  • wholesale
  • Sydney Water
  • free
  • manual
  • reset

Reset and manual are blocked for hot water only, where people want instructions, not a plumber. Every list is adjusted to your jobs.

FAQ

Plumber Google Ads questions.

What plumbers ask us about PPC before they get started.

It's paid advertising that puts your plumbing business at the top of Google when someone nearby searches for a plumber. You pay per click or call. Run well, it has a separate campaign for each job type, negative keywords, an ad schedule that matches your hours and tracking that ties every call back to the search.

You pay Google for clicks directly, and separately for management. The right budget depends on your suburbs, which jobs you want and how fast click prices move in your area. We don't publish prices. After the free review we suggest a starting budget and quote the management.

It usually is when every call is tracked and the waste is cut, because emergency plumbing searches come from people who need someone today. It isn't when the account pays for DIY searches, runs when nobody answers, or can't tell you which job type produced the calls.

Yes. Blocked drains, hot water, gas fitting and leak detection have different searches, values and urgency. Separate campaigns give each its own budget, ads and landing page, and give you a cost per lead for each one.

Google Ads is an auction. When hot water systems fail on a cold morning or drains back up after heavy rain, more plumbers bid for the same searches at once and click prices rise. Separate budgets and bid limits stop one surge from eating the month.

Many plumbers bid on brand searches. Using a brand name in your ad text has trade mark rules, and you shouldn't suggest you're an authorised dealer if you're not. We only name brands you genuinely supply or service. General information, not legal advice.

Start with jobs, apprenticeship, salary, course, TAFE, licence, DIY, how to, YouTube, Bunnings, Reece, supplies, parts and wholesale. Then add the work you don't do, and keep adding from your search terms report.

With Google forwarding numbers on call assets for calls straight from the ad, a tracked number on your website for people who click through first, and conversion tracking on your forms. Together they give you a cost per lead for each campaign.

Yes. We're based in Western Sydney and manage Google Ads for plumbers and other trades across Sydney. You choose the suburbs you want work in, and we target those instead of the whole city.

Ads bring calls within days and you pay for each click. Local SEO builds your Google Maps ranking, which brings calls without paying per click but takes months. Many plumbers start with ads and build the map ranking alongside.
