The business

Jimmy runs Design Timber Flooring. He's been laying, sanding and finishing timber floors around Sydney for more than 20 years, and his work speaks for itself. That's why most of his jobs came the old-fashioned way: a happy customer telling a friend.

Referrals are the best leads a tradie can get. They're also impossible to plan around. Some months the phone rings off the hook, some months it doesn't, and there's nothing you can do to turn the tap on. Jimmy had room for more work and wanted a steadier way to get it.

The problem

There were two. The first was simple: he didn't have a website. When someone searched for a timber flooring contractor, there was nothing for Google to show, and nothing for a customer to check before calling.

The second was harder. Jimmy had already paid an SEO agency. He spent thousands, got reports he didn't need, and saw no new work. After that, it's fair to be suspicious of the next person promising rankings. He decided to give it one more go, on the condition that it wouldn't eat into his time.

He'd been burnt once. The job wasn't just to rank him. It was to show him it could work.

What we did

We started with the website, because everything else depends on it. Then we ran the same local SEO process we describe in our guide to ranking higher on Google Maps.

1. A website built for the jobs he wanted

We designed and built the site from scratch, planned around the work Jimmy wanted more of rather than a generic template. Clear services, real photos of his floors, and a quote request that's easy to find on every page. You can see more of how we approach this on our web design page.

2. A Google Business Profile that matches the site

His profile and his website now tell Google the same story: the same business details, the right category, and his services listed properly. When the two agree, Google has more reason to trust both.

3. Pages, listings and steady weekly work

From there it was the unglamorous part that actually moves rankings: the pages, the listings on the right directories, and regular photos, posts and reviews. None of it is a trick. It's doing the basics properly and consistently.

4. Almost none of Jimmy's time

Apart from a conversation at the start, Jimmy didn't have to do anything. He kept laying floors. We handled the rest.

The results

Design Timber Flooring now ranks in the top 3 on Google for "timber flooring contractors" and similar searches. Between June and September 2026 the site earned 13.3K impressions and 108 clicks from Google search.

The number Jimmy cares about is the next one. Of the first 100 people who clicked through from Google, 20 asked for a quote. That's 1 in 5, from a business that had no website at all a few months earlier.

Why it worked

  • The right search, not just any search. People typing "timber flooring contractors" are ready to hire someone. Ranking for that is worth far more than traffic from vague searches.
  • A site that finishes the job. Ranking gets the click. A clear page with real work and an obvious way to ask for a quote turns that click into an enquiry.
  • The profile and the site agree. Matching details and services make it easier for Google to trust and rank both.
  • Twenty years of good work, finally visible. The reputation was already there. The website and profile simply put it where people were looking.

What this could mean for your business

If people already visit your website, you can get more customers without spending more on ads. If you live on word of mouth, Google can give you a steadier stream of enquiries alongside it. And if you're thinking about taking on more jobs and bringing in subcontractors, a reliable flow of quote requests is what makes that possible.

Every area and trade is different, so we won't promise the same numbers. What we can do is show you exactly where you stand today. For more examples, see how AAA Mould Removal got 40% more leads in two weeks or all our case studies.

FAQ

Questions about this case study.

What people ask us about this result.

No. Jimmy had relied on referrals for more than 20 years and had no website. We designed and built it from scratch, then ran local SEO on the site and his Google Business Profile.

Very little. Apart from an initial conversation about his business and the jobs he wanted, we handled the website, the Google Business Profile and the ongoing SEO work.

Of the first 100 people who clicked through to the website from Google, 20 sent a quote request. Most websites convert a far smaller share of visitors.
