I'm Ayman, from Ayman Results in Western Sydney. We do both Google Ads and SEO for local businesses, so I don't have a reason to push you toward one. "Should I do Google Ads or SEO?" is a question I get every week, and the honest answer depends on two things: how quickly you need work, and how long you plan to be in business.
The short version
- Google Ads brings calls fast, but you pay for every click, forever.
- SEO takes 6 to 12 weeks to start moving, but the calls keep coming without paying per click.
- Need work this month? Start with Ads. Building for the next few years? Start SEO now.
- Many tradies run Ads while SEO builds, then cut ad spend back as organic calls grow.
- Both fail if your website doesn't turn visitors into calls.
How Google Ads works for tradies
You choose the searches you want to show up for, like "emergency electrician Penrith", set a budget, and pay each time someone clicks your ad. Your ad appears at the top of the page, above the map and the normal results.
The big strength is speed. A well set-up campaign can bring calls in the first week. It's also controllable: you can switch it on for the jobs you want, in the suburbs you want, at the hours you can answer the phone. For emergency work, where people want someone now, that's powerful.
The weakness is that it never stops costing. The day the budget runs out, you disappear. And in busy trades in Sydney, clicks can be expensive.
How SEO works for tradies
SEO is getting your Google Business Profile and website to show up in the free results: the map with the top 3, and the listings underneath. You don't pay per click. You pay for the work, or do it yourself, and once you're ranking, the calls keep coming.
The weakness is time. It usually takes 6 to 12 weeks to see real movement, sometimes longer in busy trades. WeFlow Pressure Cleaning got to Google's first page in about four weeks, but I wouldn't promise that to everyone. My full process is in how to rank higher on Google Maps.
Ads rent you a spot at the top. SEO builds you one.
Side by side
| Google Ads | SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed to first calls | Days | Usually 6 to 12 weeks |
| How you pay | Per click, plus management | Monthly work, or your own time |
| When you stop paying | Calls stop straight away | Rankings usually fade slowly |
| Trust from customers | Some people skip the ads | Map and organic results often get more trust |
| Control | Choose exact jobs, suburbs and hours | Less direct control, broader reach |
| Best for | Emergency work, filling gaps, new businesses | Long-term, lower cost per job |
Which should you start with?
Start with Google Ads if
- You need calls this month to keep the business going.
- You do emergency work, like plumbing, electrical or locksmithing, where people call the first good option.
- You're launching a new service or moving into a new area.
Start with SEO if
- You've got steady work now and want to stop relying on referrals or lead sites like hipages.
- Your trade is niche or your area isn't that competitive, so ranking is realistic.
- You're planning to be in business for years and want the cheapest leads long term.
Running both
For a lot of tradies, the best plan is both, in a particular order:
- Month 1: start Ads for the jobs you want most. Start SEO at the same time.
- Months 2 to 4: Ads keep the phone ringing while your Google profile and website climb.
- Month 4 onwards: as calls from the map and organic results grow, reduce ad spend. Keep ads for emergency work, quiet months or new services.
Ads also teach you which searches turn into jobs, which tells you which pages to build for SEO. They work well together.
Where tradies waste ad money
- Broad keywords. "Electrician" alone can bring clicks from people looking for electrician jobs or courses. Add negative keywords like "jobs", "salary", "course" and "apprenticeship".
- Too big an area. Showing ads across all of Sydney when you only want work within 30 minutes.
- Sending clicks to the home page. Someone searching "blocked drain" should land on a blocked drain page.
- Not tracking calls. If you don't know which clicks turned into calls and jobs, you can't tell what's working.
- Running ads when you can't answer. Schedule ads for hours you or someone can pick up.
We've written trade-specific guides for Google Ads for plumbers, electricians, builders and roofers.
The bit both depend on: your website
Ads and SEO both send people to your website. If the website doesn't make it obvious what you do, where, and how to call, both channels leak money. AAA Mould Removal was paying for steady Google Ads traffic, but most visitors left without calling. We rebuilt the website without changing the ad budget.
So before spending more on either, make sure the website works. Here's how we approach web design for tradies, and if you're weighing up SEO costs, here's what SEO costs for tradies in Australia.
