01Accountant SEO

Nobody searches "accounting firm".

They search for the job they need done, often with a suburb or "near me" on the end. SEO for accountants starts by matching those searches, one service at a time.

  • tax return near me
  • accountant near me
  • small business accountant Penrith
  • tax agent Parramatta
  • SMSF accountant Sydney
  • bookkeeper near me
  • BAS agent Blacktown
  • crypto tax accountant
  • accountant for tradies
  • rental property tax accountant
  • set up a company Australia
  • ABN registration help
  • Xero bookkeeper Sydney
  • EOFY tax planning
  • cheap tax return Sydney
  • accountant for doctors
  • late tax returns help
  • payroll and STP setup

Get the Google Business Profile category right. For most practices "Accountant" is the primary category. "Tax preparation service" fits if individual returns are a big part of your work, and "Bookkeeping service" only if you really offer it. We check what the top accounting firms near you use before changing anything, and we never add a category for work you don't do.

List every service. Google allows up to 99 services on your profile, and each one is another search you can match. We write a plain description for your top 20, so someone looking for a BAS agent or SMSF help can see you do it.

Then give the big ones a page. Tax returns, BAS, bookkeeping, company setup and SMSF are different searches from different clients. A page each beats one long "Our services" list.

02Accounting firm marketing in Sydney

Rank before tax time, not during it.

Accounting searches follow the tax year. From July to October, everyone wants a tax agent at once. SEO takes months to build, so the work has to start while you're quiet.

  1. November to February

    Build

The quiet stretch after tax time. Fix the profile, write service pages and start the niche pages that take longest to rank.

  2. March to May

    Plan

Pages for EOFY tax planning, crypto and property investors go live, so they're ranking by the time people start asking.

  3. June

    EOFY

Posts, a fresh profile and reviews from last year's clients. Make it easy to book an appointment from Google.

  4. July to October

    Tax time

You're busy, so the system runs itself: review requests after every lodgement, weekly posts, and BAS reminders for business clients.

BAS deadlines bring their own searches. Every quarter, business owners who've fallen behind look for a BAS agent or bookkeeper fast. A page that explains what you do, which software you use and how quickly you can catch them up converts those searches into ongoing clients, who are worth far more than a single tax return.

Tax time is when reviews pile up. You see more clients in four months than the rest of the year. Ask every one of them, by text or email, with a direct review link. A review that says "tax return for my plumbing business, done in a week" helps you rank for both the service and the niche.

03Trust signals and citations

Clients check before they call.

People hand their accountant their income, their business and sometimes their super. Before they book, many check you're the real thing. Google does something similar: it trusts a firm more when the same name, address and phone number turn up on respected, relevant sites.

Registered tax agents are on a public register. The Tax Practitioners Board keeps one, and your registration number belongs on your website. Membership of CPA Australia, CA ANZ or the IPA, and listings in the Xero and MYOB partner directories, are both trust signals for clients and citations for Google. We list you only where you're genuinely a member or partner.

Your copy has rules too. Registered agents work under the TPB's Code of Professional Conduct, and Australian Consumer Law applies to every business. In plain terms: no false or misleading claims. We don't write "guaranteed biggest refund" or "best accountant in Sydney", and we don't claim qualifications or partner status you don't hold. This is general information, not legal or regulatory advice, so check anything specific with the TPB or your professional body.

  1. Tax Practitioners Board registerPublic register of registered tax and BAS agents. Clients can look you up.
  2. CPA Australia, CA ANZ or IPA directoryMember directories for the body you actually belong to.
  3. Xero and MYOB partner directoriesAdvisor listings that can link to your site and show your location.
  4. Apple, Bing, Yelp, FoursquareThe core business listings, with the same name, address and phone.
  5. Google Business Profile and websiteEverything above points back here, and matches it exactly.
  6. Your firmVerified, consistent and easy to trust.

Listings depend on what you actually hold. We never add a membership or partner badge you don't have.

04SEO for accounting firms

Pick your clients, then build their pages.

The firms that rank best rarely try to be everyone's accountant. They choose the clients they want more of, and build pages that speak to them by name.

Tax returnsBAS and bookkeepingBusiness structureTax planning
Tradies/accountant-for-tradies//bookkeeping-for-tradies/SectionSection
Medical professionals/accountant-for-doctors/Section/tax-planning-medical/
Property investors/rental-property-tax/SectionSection
Small businessSection/bas-agent-penrith//company-setup/Section
Crypto traders/crypto-tax-accountant/Section

Example. Each blue cell is a page aimed at one client type and one job. Your grid depends on the clients you want.

Client type pages win the specific searches. "Accountant for tradies" and "tax accountant for doctors" are searched by people who want someone who already understands their work: tools and vehicles for a sparky, salary packaging and service entities for a GP, depreciation schedules for a property investor. A page that talks about those things, with examples and FAQs, ranks and converts better than a generic one.

Service pages catch everyone else. Tax returns, BAS, bookkeeping, company setup, SMSF and crypto tax each get a page, plus a page for each suburb you want to win. All of them link to each other, so Google sees a firm with real depth. The same idea runs through our small business SEO work, adapted for a profession where trust does the selling.

05Local SEO for accountants

Down the road, or online?

Some clients want to sit across a desk. Others never want to leave the couch. The way you're set up decides which searches you can realistically win.

Local office

Win the map.

Your office address shows on Google and you rank from that spot. Accurate hours, office photos, a profile full of services and reviews that mention your suburb put you in the map results for "accountant near me". Suburb pages help you reach the next few suburbs over.

  • accountant near me
  • tax agent Penrith
  • bookkeeper Castle Hill
Online firm

Win the niche.

If you work with clients Australia-wide, the map matters less and your website matters more. Niche pages, guides that answer real questions and a clear way to get started online are what rank for searches with no suburb at all.

  • online tax return accountant
  • crypto tax accountant Australia
  • accountant for Airbnb hosts

Your website basics, either way. Your title tag names the service and the area. Your main heading says what you do and where. Your name, address and phone number match your Google profile exactly, in the footer of every page, with LocalBusiness schema and a Google map on the contact page. Type site: and your web address into Google: under 30 pages and there's not much for it to rank.

Then keep the profile alive. A weekly post (a deadline reminder, a tax tip, a team photo), photos of the office and the team, and answers to the questions people ask on your profile. We also watch for spam listings with keyword-stuffed names and report them. Our local SEO service covers the full map side.

06Tax agent SEO, step by step

Audited, then lodged.

A clear order of work, so the basics are done before the busy season and the growth work runs in the background.

  1. Week 1

    Review

Where you rank for your main services across your area, your profile and reviews next to the top firms, and the clients you want more of.

  2. Weeks 2 to 4

    Profile

Categories, every service, descriptions, booking link, hours, photos and a review routine your team can run at tax time.

  3. Weeks 5 to 8

    Website

Title tags, headings, matching details, schema and a map. Then service, client type and suburb pages, all linked.

  4. Weeks 9 to 12

    Citations

TPB and member directories where you're listed, Xero and MYOB, Apple, Bing, Yelp and Foursquare. Then weekly posts and reviews.

FAQ

Accountant SEO questions.

What accountants and practice owners ask us before getting started.

SEO for accountants is the work that gets your practice found on Google when people search for an accountant, tax agent or bookkeeper. It covers your Google Business Profile, your Google Maps ranking, service and niche pages on your website, reviews and listings such as professional and software partner directories.

Rank in the map results for searches like "tax return near me" in your area, and build website pages for the services and client types you want more of. Then win the click with reviews, clear credentials and an easy way to book. Start building before tax time so you're ranking when demand peaks.

"Accountant" is the usual primary category. "Tax preparation service" and "Bookkeeping service" can be added if they're a real part of your work. We check what the top firms near you use, and never add categories for services you don't offer.

Ideally between November and March. Rankings take months to build, and the busiest searches happen from July to October. Starting in June means you're building while your competitors are already ranking.

Yes. A local office ranks in Google Maps around its address, so the profile, reviews and suburb pages matter most. An online firm serving clients Australia-wide relies more on niche pages and helpful guides, because many of its searches don't include a location.

If you want more of those clients, yes. People search for "accountant for tradies" or "accountant for doctors" because they want someone who understands their work. A page that speaks to that, with real examples and FAQs, usually ranks and converts better than a general services page.

Registered tax and BAS agents work under the Tax Practitioners Board's Code of Professional Conduct, and consumer law applies to all advertising. We avoid false or misleading claims, guarantees about refunds and unearned credentials. This is general information, not legal advice, so confirm specifics with the TPB or your professional body.

Your Tax Practitioners Board registration, member directories for CPA Australia, CA ANZ or the IPA if you belong, Xero and MYOB partner directories if you're a partner, and the core listings: Apple, Bing, Yelp and Foursquare. Plus any directory already ranking for accountant searches in your area.

It depends on how many services, niches and suburbs you want to rank for and how strong the firms around you are. We record a free 3-minute video review first, then quote for what's actually needed. We don't publish a price list.

Profile fixes can show movement within weeks. Ranking in the top three for competitive searches in Sydney often takes a few months, which is why timing around the tax year matters so much.

Access to your Google Business Profile and website, a yes or no on the services list, your registration and membership details, the client types you want more of, and someone to send review requests after each job. We handle the rest.

Barely anything. You just do what you do best: Turn phone calls into customers.

Be found before tax time.
