Ever heard of The Lion's Share?

The Lion's Share

The Pareto Principle states that 20% of content online gets 80% of the views.

But that's dead wrong.

It's more like 5% of content gets 95% of views.

You know why?

It's obvious, it's boring.

Repetitive. Cliche. And most of all, not human at all.

So here's the secret to joining that 5% rather than being forgotten in the 95%.

The secret to creating content that sells.

Write like you're actually speaking to a good friend.

I've seen this mistake time and time again, some of the most horrendous pieces of work out there in the form of writing.

Keep it casual and real, like I'm doing here.

That means, a lot of short sentences.

No one's got time to read a huge paragraph all jumbled up into one big block.

Make it EASY to read and skim through.

Use razor sharp hooks.

Once you've caught the reader, don't let go of him.

There aren't two ways about it, you hook the reader AND keep him in that position.

Make it impossible to put your stuff down. Get him to read the first sentence and then the next… and the next… until he gets to the end, gasping for air.

So let's not just do:

"We're really good at what we do and the competition is bad because we care about you and we've been in business for 20 years."

That's weaker than a vegan bodybuilder.

This isn't making it in contentland.

Sometimes, you've got to inject some dynamite into your copy.

Make it about THEM.

When people first land on your article they're not ready to commit yet. They're just browsing the menu, seeing if anything catches their eye.

It's up to you to use your headlines and subheads and paragraphs to SELL them on the idea of sticking around and reading more.

You need to make THEM the star of the show.

Not trying to hurt your feelings, but no one cares about us, they don't pay attention to us.

They're looking to help themselves and as a business, you're trying to help them.

Only after they believe and understand you're really trying to help them will they be ready to hear your story.

So keep it laser focused and cut the cookie clutter.

Anyways, let's get to work.
